Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest particular decisions from the official, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
