The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and remained hopeful about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and there are permutations around that, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of three Australian summers in four years.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
