Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound honor cash to the MVT, which works to save the UK's independent concert spaces.

He was presented with the prize on 16 October as his latest record the album was named the best record of the previous year.

He has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his early career.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are facing challenges."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have permanently closed – roughly one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts including Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by adding a small levy to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his recent tour to help numerous small stages across Britain.

The money helped locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues arising from water damage, fire incidents and bereavements, as well as regulatory hurdles, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations obtained funding support in upgrading infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and fans.

"The concept that money from performances in large arenas backs the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize prize money to worthy causes.

Back when the band received the award in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman Cocker stated that the act would donate their winnings to the organization the charity.

In 2002, artist Ms Dynamite shared her award between multiple good causes, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"Additionally, I gave a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they needed new equipment," the artist told the media.

In recent years, the band contributed their funds to the community center that supported their band, as well as other independent music bodies.

And winners that year they gave their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"The victory was ample," said vocalist Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched another person's life."

Recently, the MVT revealed it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in that region, by bringing them into public stewardship.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were purchased under the Own Our Venues program, which is backed by the arts council and enthusiasts who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
