No fewer than 13 people killed and 98 injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in national projects. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
