Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Zak Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in only eleven days of cricket – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in the third Test probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
